(Formerly the Weald Allotment & Gardeners’ Association)

WAG is a registered Community Interest Company, run by its members.

Any plotholder can register as a Member of WAG CIC online by using the following link:

The Weald Allotment site is owned and managed by the City Council.

The Council’s Allotments Officers can be contacted on allotments@brighton-hove.gov.uk

or call 01273 292929  (Mon-Fri 9.30am-1.30pm)

WAG CIC is a not-for-profit organisation and membership is open to any registered plotholder on the Weald Allotment site.  WAG CIC does not own or manage the site; it exists to provide facilities and services to plotholders and the wider community. Full details can be found on our website at https://wordpress.com/home/wealdallotmentgardeners.home.blog

WAG is managed by an Executive Committee (the Board of Directors) elected by members at a General Meeting. The current Directors are:

John Austin (Chair); Jane Moffatt (Vice Chair); Simon Battle (Treasurer); Peter Fishenden; Ian White.

There are three entrances to the site. The main entrance is at Weald Avenue and has access for cars.  The other entrances have pedestrian access only and are located at Holmes Avenue and Nevill Avenue.  Plotholders and co-workers pay a returnable fee for a key which operates the lock/padlocks at all three entrances.  Keys can be obtained from the on-site Shop during opening hours (normally Sat and Sun 10am – 1pm).

Parking on-site is limited and is available on a first-come basis.  There is a car park by the main Weald Avenue gate and a central car park by the central south/north haulageway.  Car parking for allotment holders is also available just outside the gates at Holmes Avenue and Nevill Avenue.  Vehicular access to plots via the haulageways is allowed for delivery to and removal of material from your plot but parking is not permitted on the haulageways which must be kept free of obstruction.

Toilets are available in the building by the Weald Avenue entrance for use by plotholders during shop opening hours.  We also have an accessible toilet close to the building which is available at all times to plotholders who have purchased a key.  Keys for the toilet are available from the Shop for a fee of £12.

WAG runs a Shop on site, staffed by volunteers, which is open 10am – 1pm Saturdays and Sundays. We would love to open during the week if we could recruit sufficient volunteers. If anyone would like to help, please leave a message or call in to the shop.

Most items on sale are subject to a discount of 10% off the listed price.

We stock over 300 vegetable seeds and 100 flower seeds including many organic varieties.

We have canes, twine, netting, seaweed extract and a wide range of natural fertilisers and bags of various composts and soil improvers.

We also take orders for and have a range of seasonal items such as seed potatoes, onion sets and garlic.

Our products are always high quality and usually cheaper than you will find at garden centres or online.

One of our most popular products is manure from a local South Downs farmer at Mile Oak. The current price is £3.75 a barrow. We can provide the loan of a barrow.

We are a not-for profit shop. Any trading surplus goes directly into the Community Interest funds for maintenance of the building, site facilities and improvements and projects for plotholders.

The Weald Community Food Project (previously known as the Community Fridge) is a community project run entirely by volunteers to help reduce food waste.

A team of foragers collects food from the local supermarkets which are near to their “use by“, or “best before” dates. The project also has a weekly delivery from FareShare (https://faresharesussexandsurrey.org.uk/) and regular donations of surplus produce from plot holders. This food is then distributed to the community by our fridge heroes.

We distribute fresh, ambient, chilled and frozen food as well as plants, herbs and flowers.

We open in the Weald allotment building’s kitchen and community room on Thursdays and Sundays from 10am to about 11.30am, closing when all the food has gone.

Anyone can donate food, and anyone can take away an agreed number of items – this varies according to what has been donated. We ask for a voluntary contribution of £1 to cover our overheads, and some anonymised information about the size of your household and postcode to enable demographic analysis. Our objective is to reduce food waste.

You can find us on Facebook, Weald Community Fridgehttps://www.facebook.com/wealdcommunityfridge

We are always looking for volunteers.

If you want to volunteer or have any questions email  wealdcommunityfridge@gmail.com

The shop and community food project are housed in the ‘Weald Pavilion’ building, which is over 50 years old. At the time of writing, we are working to refurbish the building, the compound and the memorial garden. We are using a mixture of volunteers and paid contractors. If you are interested in getting involved, let us know by contacting our Chair at chair@wealdallotments.org

We try to keep in touch with our plotholders through a variety of media.

We have Noticeboards at the three entrances where we post information.

We have a WhatsApp Group, WAG (Weald Allotments & Gardeners), open to all plotholders, family members and co-workers where we post information but which is also used by plotholders to exchange information, share ideas, growing tips, advice and swap, give away or request plants, seeds, produce, tools etc. Posts must be relevant to the allotment.  We also have a WhatsApp group, WAG CIC Official notices, solely for posting formal notices and information from the Directors, which is not interactive,.  You can join either or both WhatsApp Groups by contacting the Administrator on 07956 369056 with your name, mobile number and plot number.

We also have a Facebook page.  It is a private group with more than 300 members and, like the WhatsApp group, is used by members to share information and photos and to post notice of meetings and events.   It can be found on Facebook as Weald Allotment, Hove or at https://www.facebook.com/groups/1432956697018116

Site Representatives are nominated by plotholders but appointed by the Council.  They are independent of WAG.

Weald Allotments has 4 Site Representatives.  The Site Representatives are allotment tenants who voluntarily give their time to help other tenants and to liaise with the Brighton and Hove Allotment Federation and the City Council’s Allotment Officer on site matters. Each representative is responsible for a specific area of the site.

The site representatives, with their respective areas are:

Mo Andrews (South West quarter) – plots 20-62 & 101-142           moandrews23@gmail.com

Ian White (South East quarter) – plots 1-19 & 63-100 &143-161        ian@wealdallotments.org 07789 437796

Peter Fishenden (North West quarter) – plots 181-220 &259-297 & 324-336 peter@wealdallotments.org

Sue Baumgardt (North East quarter)– plots 162-180 & 221-258 & 298-323 suebaumgardt@gmail.com 07974 201999

The main roles of Site Rep are:

  • Plot inspections – A minimum of three of these are undertaken each year starting at the beginning of the growing season. The first inspection is carried out by the Site Reps. A council Allotment Officer conducts the other inspections and is usually accompanied by the Site Reps.
  • Dealing with queries and questions – Site Reps can be contacted if a tenant wants to:
  • Report issues such as water leaks, broken locks, vandalism, issues with neighbouring plots.
  • Ask advice about managing their plot, interpretation of allotment rules, notices received after an inspection.
  • Letting vacant plots –   The council’s Allotment Office compiles lists of plots that become vacant in each sector of the Weald. They then contact people at the top of the waiting list and arrange Letting Events. The Site Reps meet the prospective tenants on site, give them an introduction to the Weald and the allotment rules and show them the plots that are available to let.  When a plot has been matched to a new tenant, the Site Rep informs the Allotment Office who then issue them with a Tenancy Agreement.
